Talking to Kids About the Death of a Pet. How do you tell them? Here's how…

Losing a pet is hard for anyone, but especially for children. For children, this is often their first meaningful encounter with death. This article will help explain pet loss to your child.

Be Honest - Use simple, direct language. Tell your child what happened (sparing any details that would cause traumatic image) and allow them to ask questions.

Let them be part of the process - Plan a memorial ritual and decide together how you will honor your pet's life and keep their memory alive. Planting a tree, assembling a photo album or telling each other funny stories are all great ways to celebrate their life.

Suggest they write or draw pictures - Respect and encourage your child's needs to express and share their feelings and sadness.
